Anyone who has lived in Collierville long enough knows our weather can’t make up its mind. One day you’re walking the Town Square in short sleeves.
The next, a storm system rolls through and sends the barometric pressure up and down. Plenty of people feel those changes in their ears. That full, plugged-up feeling is common when the weather shifts.
When it sticks around, you may start wondering whether you’re dealing with pressure or something else, like an infection.
The two can feel very similar at first, which can make it difficult to know what’s going on. Ear pressure and an ear infection may cause some of the same sensations, but they don’t happen for the same reasons.
They also don’t always need the same type of care. Knowing the differences can help you make sense of what you’re feeling.
A lot happens in the small space behind your eardrum. This middle section of the ear contains air, along with three tiny bones that help carry sound.
It isn’t completely closed off from the rest of your body. A narrow passage connects that space with the area behind your nose and opens briefly when you swallow, chew or yawn.
That’s how your ear adjusts when the air pressure around you changes. The eardrum sits between that air-filled space and the ear canal.
For it to move normally, the pressure on either side needs to stay even. Fluid can also collect behind it when the middle ear isn’t draining as it should.
These details become important when you’re trying to figure out why an ear feels plugged, sore or different from normal.
Ear discomfort can come from several places, which is why the feeling alone doesn’t always tell you what’s causing it. Pressure changes from weather or altitude can affect the space behind the eardrum.
Congestion from a cold or allergies can also make that area feel full or blocked. Earwax is another possible cause, especially when it builds up enough to press against the canal or change how sound travels.
Other causes are tied more closely to irritation or inflammation. Water left in the ear after swimming can bother the skin inside the canal, while an infection may involve the canal or the space behind the eardrum.
Jaw tension can sometimes create soreness near the ear even when the ear itself is healthy. Because these problems start in different places, the discomfort may feel similar at first even though the causes are not the same.
Ear pressure starts when the air on either side of the eardrum isn’t equal. The imbalance can push or pull on the eardrum, leading to fullness, popping or discomfort.
Swallowing or yawning may bring some relief because the Eustachian tube opens briefly and lets air move through. Changes tied to weather, flying or congestion may also come and go as the surrounding conditions change.
An ear infection involves inflammation rather than an imbalance in air pressure. Fluid may collect behind the eardrum, or the skin inside the canal may become inflamed.
Pain can continue even when the weather or altitude stays the same. Some infections also cause fever, drainage or tenderness, although those symptoms aren’t always present.
Muffled hearing can happen with either problem, so an ear exam may be needed when the other differences aren’t clear.
The level of discomfort can vary with both ear pressure and an infection. Pressure is often described as a dull ache or tight feeling, and the intensity may change throughout the day.
An infection may create a steadier sensation that feels deeper in the ear. Some people notice a throbbing feeling, while others describe it as a consistent ache.
Intensity alone doesn’t always separate one from the other. Ear pressure can sometimes feel fairly strong, while an infection may cause only mild discomfort.
Pain tolerance also differs from person to person, so the experience isn’t the same for everyone. Paying attention to the type of discomfort and how it changes can tell you more than simply rating it on a pain scale.
Fever comes from the immune system reacting to something it recognizes as a possible threat. During an ear infection, immune cells release chemical signals that tell the brain to temporarily raise the body’s temperature.
The change happens throughout the body, even though the infection itself may be limited to the ear. Children tend to develop fevers with infections more readily than adults, so this difference may be easier to spot in younger family members.
Ear pressure doesn’t usually set off that immune response because there isn’t an infection for the body to fight. The problem is mechanical, involving how air moves and balances around the eardrum.
Even when the pressure feels uncomfortable, the immune system has no reason to reset the body’s temperature. That’s why fever fits with an infection more often than it does with pressure alone.
Pressure and infection can both affect hearing, but the changes may not sound exactly the same. The differences you hear may include:
As that space fills, the eardrum has less room to move normally. The pressure inside the ear can also change as the fluid builds.
Your immune system responds at the same time by sending cells and chemicals to fight the infection. That response can make the tissue swell and increase the amount of fluid in the area.
As the infection clears, the inflammation usually settles and the fluid begins to drain or reabsorb. In some cases, that fluid can remain for a while even after the infection itself has passed.
You don’t always need to decide about an ear problem right away. If the discomfort is mild and gradually fades, you may be able to give it some time and see how your ear responds.
Keep track of how long the change lasts and whether your ear is getting back to normal.
A problem that hangs around, returns repeatedly or starts changing your hearing is different. At that point, having someone look inside the ear can tell you whether you’re still dealing with pressure or something else.
Mild ear pressure often responds to movements that help the Eustachian tube open naturally. Try swallowing a few times, yawning or chewing gum to encourage air to move between the middle ear and throat.
Sipping water can create the same swallowing motion without putting extra force on the eardrum. If congestion is part of the problem, a warm shower or saline nasal spray may help clear the nose and make pressure equalization easier.
Avoid trying to force the ear to pop. Blowing hard while holding your nose can put more pressure on the eardrum than intended.
Give your ears some time between attempts instead of repeating the technique over and over. If the pressure continues, becomes painful or comes with other changes, stop treating it as a simple plugged-ear problem and have it checked.
Preventing ear trouble isn’t about avoiding every weather change, cold or flight. A few practical choices can lower the chances of pressure, irritation or other problems returning:
